"We're Mad As Hell, And We're Not Going To Take It Anymore!"

By Rebecca Iocca & Tom Hurst, 2005

How much tax do you pay? Ten, twenty, or perhaps thirty percent? In fact, the Republicans and Democrats have made sure that the average American now pays over 50% of their income in some form of tax! For a two-income family this means that one person is actually working full-time for the government! The serfs in England were considered slaves even though they only had to pay 1/3 of their income to the king. Our situation is even worse - we are indeed slaves to our out-of-control government.

What are these taxes we pay? Federal, state, county, and even city income taxes take a big bite for most people. The Federal income tax was started in 1913 to tax the very rich. It was initially only 2%, and then only on earnings over $8,000, a fortune at the time; the form was only 1 page, and the entire tax code only a few pages. Now, nearly everyone pays a double-digit income tax, and there are over 1,100 forms and nearly 80,000 pages of tax regulations. Then we have Social Security tax (15.3%), sales tax (7.5% in Clark County), property tax (1% of actual value per year), gasoline tax ($0.52/gallon in Nevada), auto registration tax, etc. The list is nearly endless. Then there are hidden taxes, otherwise known as corporate taxes. In reality, corporations pay no tax. To them, taxes, tax compliance expenses and various fees they pay are simply a cost of doing business which they pass on to the consumer in the form of increased prices. By the time products are manufactured, distributed and sold, the retail price of many items such as automobiles is already more than 50% tax. So, you end up paying corporate taxes, too. Did you realize that you pay all of these taxes?

So, what do you get for these taxes? Do you really get services from the government worth half of your pay? Perhaps the roads? Developers pay for most of those. Police? Private security is much more likely to protect you or your property. Social Security in your old age? Private investments would have made you a millionaire. In fact, most people cannot even name a favorite government program of theirs that is necessary, let alone efficient. And even if they did, we would remind them of the great logical flaw: getting government to make other people pay for your pet government programs allows others to have government make you pay for their pet programs. This is theft and socialism. With the Republicans and Democrats "buying" votes with spending programs, government spending and taxation continually escalate. And since our current government really does very little that is truly necessary, let alone allowed by the Constitution, all of the money it spends is simply money that is taken out of our economy. This hinders economic development, eliminates jobs, and reduces our prosperity. Yes, some taxes are necessary, but for most of America's history the few essential government functions authorized by the Constitution - such as national defense and the courts - were funded by small excise taxes and duties. We want to see America return to a small, Constitutional government that will make most taxes unnecessary.

We want you to keep what you earn and spend it as you see fit. Short of stuffing your money in a mattress, there is nothing you can do with it that will not cause economic growth and increased prosperity. Think of how much better your life could be if your income was essentially doubled because most taxes were eliminated. You would have more than enough money to pay your bills, send your children to college, save for your retirement, start a business, and give generously to your favorite charity or church. Only people who love liberty truly believe that you, not the government, know best how to spend your money and live your life. Remember, evil flourishes when good people do nothing. Take action by supporting independent candidates who are pro-Liberty!
